Camping Study + FREE Printable!

I am SO excited to share this Camping Study freebie with you! It requires nearly zero prep as the parent or teacher, and will provide a variety of fun and engaging worksheets for your little one to explore! I’ve written a brief explanation of each page with some extra discussion ideas to expand their curiosity and critical thinking. This download has been designed primarily for Kindergarten children, but it can be adapted for Preschool-Grade 2 students. There are a total of five pages to be completed with a focus on sorting, matching, number recognition, addition, and practicing mindfulness in the outdoors. Make sure to scroll to the bottom for your free download of this printable!

At nearly five years old, our daughter was finally able to go ‘real’ camping. Anything that isn’t ‘real’ means that the tent is set up in our living room or somewhere else within our house. After our move back to Colorado, we were invited to go camping in the mountains. It was a wonderful experience, but we weren’t exactly prepared. Last month we were able to go camping at this same location again, but this time I made sure we were over prepared (better than the contrary). The other big difference between our two trips is that we had started our year of homeschooling before the second trip, which lasted three days. This sparked an idea and I jotted down ways we could incorporate our studies with our camping. After some more brainstorming, this collection of activities was created so we could take the homeschooling on the road, and up into the mountains!

Isn't this tent magical, like a Perkins' tent from Harry Potter?

Tent Roll and Color:*Note to parent/teacher, you will need a six-sided dice for this worksheet.* Children will enjoy this activity because it seems more like a game than a worksheet! Roll the dice and color the tent with the matching number. There are 24 tents with numbers 1-6 on them. Number recognition and matching are emphasized to help with future math problems. If multiple children are ‘playing’, turn it into a race to see who can color all of the tents first!

Mountain Math:Let’s get creative with math! Collect pebbles, pinecones, or sticks to figure out these addition problems. A tens frame with ten single digit addition equations make it a hands-on learning experience for the child. For more durability and the chance to reuse this sheet, slip it into one of these Dry Erase Pockets! The top is zippered which keeps papers inside and they can be written on with dry erase markers.

Camping Critters Scavenger Hunt:There are twelve critters to be found in this scavenger hunt! We camped for a total of three days, so we did our search throughout the entire trip. Some of these are obviously harder to find than others. We even brought along a pair of binoculars to help us in our searching adventure. For the critters you cannot spot, this gives you an opportunity for discussion! Prompts include, “What season does this critter thrive in?”, “Do we live in a state that has many turtles?”, “If we did our scavenger hunt during the day, do you think we would spy a bat? Why or why not?”. *DO NOT touch or get near these critters. Keep yourself and the animals safe.*

Camping Nature Scavenger Hunt:There are eleven elements of nature to be found in this scavenger hunt! We had much better luck with this activity compared to the Critters Hunt. Again, depending on where you are located, some of these elements may not be available to find! We definitely saw all varieties of mushrooms when we lived in the PNW, but they haven’t showed up for us here in Colorado. We were surrounded by plenty of Pine trees to find pinecones while camping, but we couldn’t find any acorns. Either way, we had fun searching!

Camping Coloring Sheet:I had to include something beautiful for the kiddos to color, so a butterfly seemed appropriate. Before starting, introduce and discuss the art element of ‘symmetry’ and its relation to butterfly wings. Encourage to color the wings so they’re mirroring each other!

Wildflowers found for our Nature Scavenger Hunt!

We circled items as we found them, then colored the page later!
