Dinosaur Unit

Who doesn't love DINOSAURS? They are so interesting, unique, and mysterious for children and adults alike!

In addition to the main curriculum we are using (BookShark, a literature-based homeschool program), I enjoy incorporating subject-related books at the local libraries, songs/videos on YouTube, crafts, games, and field trips. I am not sure if myself or Eisley were more excited to kick off our kindergarten homeschooling with a Dinosaur Unit, but either way, we wanted to share some resources with you!

Books:
  • Dinosaurs and Other Prehistoric Creatures You Can Draw by Nicole Brick & Patricia Stockland. A major hit in our household, this book features step-by-step instructions for drawing your favorite dinosaurs like the Triceratops, Ankylosaurus, and Tyrannosaurus Rex! All levels of artists can create by either following the steps, free styling the dinosaur image, drawing over with tracing paper, or using paints and multimedia instead. Fun facts are included with each dinosaur. After finishing our drawings, we stapled all of the pages together to create our own Dino drawing book!
  • Dinosaur Dance by Sandra Boynton. A fun, tiny board book geared towards youngsters. We used it as a time to dance the wiggles out and interpret our own special dance moves.
  • Dinosaur Roar! by Paul & Henrietta Stickland. Large, bold illustrations with rhyming and opposite words.
  • Dinosaurs Walked Here and Other Stories Fossils Tell by Patricia Lauber. A nonfiction chapter book featuring quality photos of museum fossils and paleontologist dig sites. A wonderful way to learn about fossil formation and different prehistoric life forms. Length for younger kiddos, but plenty of images to keep their attention!

Songs and YouTube Videos:

My best intention is to create playlists for each unit or special areas we are studying. You can feel free to subscribe to my YouTube channel for instant updates, or you can click on the individual links to each of the videos down below. Have fun!

The famous T-Rex at the Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Research Center

Field Trip:

Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center:
Address: 201 S Fairview St, Woodland Park, CO 80863
Phone: 719-686-1820
Website: www.rmdrc.com
Hours: 9am-6pm Daily

The Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center was extremely educational, highly interactive, and lots of fun for our whole family! The staff was friendly and helpful, plus they gave a great 'Discovery Presentation' for the children which allowed them to hold/feel/observe actual fossils, teeth, claws, and fossilized dinosaur poop! They offer guided tours all throughout the day, or you can choose to explore at your own pace (which is what we did).

Hope you are able to enjoy these resources with your little one and can share the mystery of dinosaurs together! What are your favorite dinosaur related activities?
